It is a complex network of processes, from production and processing to distribution and consumption, that brings food to our tables. 🌱Understanding the Food Supply Chain: From Farm to Fork

As consumers, it can be difficult to keep track of the origins of the food we eat and the various processes that brought it to our plates. To ensure responsible consumption of and access to food, it’s important to understand the entire supply chain from farm to fork.

In a typical supply chain, food passes through the hands of a farmer, a distributor, a retailer, and then finally a consumer. But there are a lot of different steps in between these major stops.

Farming

At the start of the journey, the food source is created in the form of a crop or animal. The farmer is responsible for cultivating and harvesting the product in a safe and sustainable manner. Not only do farmers tend to animals and crops, but the input products and activities they use to support their operations — such as fertilizer and ploughing — are also considered part of the farming process.

Processing

Once the crop or animal is harvested, it undergoes processing to turn it into a consumable product. This could mean grinding animal parts or sacking grains, cutting and packaging meat, or similar activities that add value to the product. Processing also includes the “downstream” activities of packaging, labeling, transport, weighing, and storing the food.

Distribution

Distributors receive the processed product from the processor and then send it to a retailer. They handle all the logistics of delivering the goods, often to multiple stores in a region. Distributors are responsible for ensuring that the product is transported safely and in a timely manner. As the food travels, it must meet health and safety standards to protect the consumer.

Retail

Retailers are the final stop in the supply chain and have the responsibility of bringing food products to the consumer. They receive the product from distributors and store them in their own facilities. Retailers are responsible for setting the pricing and letting consumers know the food’s origin and quality.

Consumption

Finally, the food enters the hands of the consumer to make it from farm to fork. It’s the consumer’s responsibility to be informed of the food’s origins and to purchase it responsibly. This includes choosing fresh or sustainably-sourced products whenever possible and consuming food within its use-by date.

Understanding the supply chain from farm to fork is the first step in playing an active role in responsible food consumption. Being aware of the origins of food and the various steps it must take before it reaches your plate can lead to better choices for the environment and the people who put food on the table.
